IN SOFIA’S KITCHEN
WRITING
The Writing Journey
Sophie has also released several culturally relevant resources for developing countries. After being approached by several teachers in Fiji and asked to help them learn how to deliver a children’s program, Sophie rolled up her sleeves and committed to creating three manual books for teachers in the local schools in Fiji. These books have also been distributed to China, Africa, India, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Mexico, Cambodia, Cyprus, Thailand and South Korea.
Her children’s books, illustrated to correspond with the country the book is written for, have been a great success capturing the imagination and heart of the children in those countries. The books are written in English with subtitles of the corresponding countries. Kula Chakula is Hungry is written for the children of Tanzania, Sokha Goes to School is written for the children of Cambodia and A Visit to the King’s Garden is written for all cultures but subtitled in Greek.
Teaching
I first started teaching a group of young children in my teenage years. It was then that the director of the organisation noticed my natural inclination towards teaching.
From there, I ran children’s clubs, worked as an early childhood educator, leading groups of Hong Kong students on an English study tour to Australia, homeschooling my three daughters until they were old enough to attend Tertiary institutions, running my own food business and facilitating cooking workshops, foodie retreats and food tours to Greece. From there I moved into teaching in a large school, teaching VET Hospitality and Food Technology.
Cookbooks
What a journey it has been writing and publishing two cookbooks! I have loved every moment of it and have learnt so much through this adventure.
My first cookbook was published in November 2016, In Sofia’s Kitchen: Mediterranean Flavours Down Under and what a wonderful response I received from all of you!
I ran foodie retreats, cooking workshops, pop up dinners, market days and special appearances in a variety of settings. It was pure fun.
Then came my 2nd cookbook and I had the experience of my first under my belt and it was such a joy to master the art of creating a cookbook. We had systems put into place over the week of cooking and taking photos not to mention the delicious feasts eating all the food at the end of each day! There’s lots involved but the extent of experience you acquire is so satisfying.
And then there’s the fun of a book launch! Oh I have got to say that’s my most favourite part. We had over 60 guests join us in our beautiful backyard on a sunny spring day and the table was overflowing with deliciously good food from my cookbooks!
